Ageing naturally & gracefully: is the focus on "anti-ageing" getting out of hand?

Posted by Natasha Dauncey on

Recently, there's been a lot discussion around ageing, the use of "anti-ageing" products & treatments by teens and more specifically about differences in ageing between different generations like Millennials vs Gen Z. The pressure to have "perfect" or "flawless" skin is sadly stronger than ever and we are seeing even younger people turning to products and aesthetic treatments that aren't age appropriate for them. While these discussions can be intriguing, we think it's important to remember that skincare shouldn't be about comparing ourselves to others or worrying about age-related stereotypes - we already have enough pressure on our appearance as it is, which has been further amplified by social media! Instead, we should follow our unique journeys and support our skin at every stage of life.

At Apothaka, we genuinely believe in skincare which embraces diversity, individuality, real (unfiltered) skin and the beauty of ageing gracefully. Whether you're in your teens, twenties, thirties, or beyond, we prefer to focus on simple routines to protect & support the skin rather than focusing on "what needs to be fixed". Our founder, Natasha Dauncey, always emphasises the importance of a skin barrier-first approach, regardless of age. By prioritising skin barrier health, we can help support our skin's natural resilience and vitality, no matter our age or life stage.

The skincare world is unfortunately full of trends, from "glass skin", elaborate 10-step skincare routines to even more concerning trends: girls as young as 18-20 getting lip filler or botox. These trends all share the common and unrealistic goal of "perfect" skin. While these trends may seem tempting, we all need to be mindful about how we (as consumers, creators, and parents) may be contributing to this unrealistic goal. We all have a responsibility for how we show up on social media, how we talk about ourselves (especially to kids / teens if we have them) and the effect it has on other people. Every filtered photo shared sends a message that our real skin isn't "good enough". Every "anti-ageing" product featured with the claim that it "rolls back the years" or gives you "glass skin" sends that same message. This is why we believe it's important to focus on skin health over skin perfection. It's essential to be intentional with skincare and keep things simple - especially for teens getting into skincare. Instead of chasing after fleeting beauty ideals, let's focus on nurturing and protecting our skin with gentle, well-formulated products that support its long-term health and well-being.

Whether you're a teen or have a teen experiencing acne or a seasoned skincare enthusiast, our goal at Apothaka remains the same: to provide you with effective, evidence-based skincare solutions which support your skin health whilst empowering you to feel confident and comfortable in your own skin.

So, as the conversation around ageing continues to evolve, let's remember that beauty should know no age. Let's celebrate the journey of growing older gracefully, embracing our individuality, and finding joy in little moments of self-care.

Thank you for being part of our Apothaka community, where skincare is more than just a routine – it's a celebration of self-love and acceptance, at every age. Here's to ageing gracefully, together!
