Firstly, a very Happy New Year to you all - I hope you had a lovely Christmas break! January can often be a tough month. We've usually over-indulged a little too much over Christmas it's pretty common for us to make resolutions or goals about being more healthy - eating better (see my previous post for more on this), exercising more, doing a "detox". This is all good stuff but we shouldn't forget our skin which is probably paying the price for the last couple of weeks - it might need a helping hand! Today's post is about a natural ingredient that I've found works wonders for cleansing and healing the skin: Bentonite Clay.
Clays have been used for centuries for their healing properties and there are several types of clay available. Bentonite (or Montmorillonite) Clay is composed of volcanic ash which is rich in a number of minerals and is thought to be one of the most effective and powerful healing clays. It comes mainly from the US (Wyoming), but is also found in France and Italy.
Bentonite clay has the ability to draw out toxins and impurities that we are commonly exposed to in the environment, through the food we consume and through cosmetic products we use. For the skin specifically, it also offers the following amazing benefits:
- absorbent - making it ideal for balancing combination / oilier skin, though it's suitable for all skin types
- toning - firms and tightens the skin
- antiseptic - ideal for treating acne / blemishes but also skin conditions such as ezcema, dermatitis and psoriasis
- healing - over time it helps to reduce / fade scars
I've been using bentonite clay to make my own DIY face mask for a the last couple of years and I swear by it. Admittedly I haven't tried other clays (other than in shop bought face masks which never did anything for me) but I stumbled upon it in my research and have never needed to try anything else after the results I had with it. It really is amazing stuff - it has helped to balance, clear and firm up my skin and it leaves it feeling super soft and glowing after using the mask! What's more, with this one ingredient and a couple of other things you'll already have at home, you can make this yourself without spending lots of money on pre-made face masks which often have a lot of unnecessary ingredients / fillers.
So as a special offer through January, which is often seen as the month of detox, I'll be offering a free sample of bentonite clay (enough to give you 4 weekly treatments - a month's supply) with any standard (30ml) purchase of my Apothaka rejuvenating face oils, as well as my very own recipe for a weekly cleansing mask that you can easily make at home yourself. For those of you who already have bentonite clay and would like to try my recipe, I'm also happy to share it with you - just sign up to my newsletter and I will email it to you. Of course there are plenty of recipes online for clay masks, however I use a unique ingredient in mine which also provides a gentle exfoliation - can you guess what it might be?!
